The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

wisdomteeth_removalThe average adult has 32 teeth by age eighteen and each has a specific name and function. However, the average mouth is only large enough to hold 28 teeth. These other 4 teeth are your third molars, also known as wisdom teeth. Unfortunately, for the majority of today’s young adults, their jaws are not large enough to allow the eruption of the third molars in a normal, healthy, and functional position.

An individual can experience swelling of the affected area, sore throat, headaches, and ultimately infection. Impacted teeth are also known to develop cysts that can enlarge, hollowing out the jaw, causing permanent damage to the adjacent bone, teeth, and nerves.

Many of the problems created by impacted third molars can develop without symptoms. Even if they erupt into the proper position, since they are very difficult to clean, it is recommended to have them removed in order to improve the overall health of the mouth and to prevent future issues.

To determine if wisdom teeth are present and if removal is indicated, a thorough examination of your mouth is performed. There are different types of impaction, which will also determine the protocol we will take to extract your third molars.

Dental Extractions

Your dentist may refer you to our office for removal of other teeth either because of disease and pain or in preparation for implant placement or orthodontics. All of these procedures can be performed in our offices as well.
