Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct protruding ears; it’s also called ear pinning surgery. This is usually done before a child starts school, around age five or six, but can also be done to adults. Children and adults with prominent ears can be extremely self-conscious. Otoplasty can result in improved self-image and self-esteem.
You may be considering otoplasty if you or your child have:
- Ears that protrude or are large
- Ear tips that fold down over the ear (known as “lop ear”)
- Large earlobes
- An injured or congenitally deformed ear known as “cupped ear” (missing outer curve) or “shell ear” (missing natural ear folds or creases)
