MEDICATION RELATED OSTEONECROSIS
Osteonecrosis, also known as avascular necrosis (AVN), aseptic necrosis or ischemic bone necrosis, is a disease resulting in the death of bone cells. If the process involves the bones near a joint, it often leads to the collapse of the joint surface and subsequent arthritis due to an irregular joint surface. Fortunately, a variety of treatment options are available to treat osteonecrosis.
Symptoms
Caused by medication used to treat osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis medications attack osteoclasts and remove bone
Osteoclasts clean out the dead bone but this causes a problem if the patient has had trauma to the head and neck
Therapy
Antibiotic treatment for bacterial infection
Mouth rinses
Combined Vitamin E and Pentoxyfylline course of therapy
Surgical removal of dead tissue
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
